When The Boss Is Away, Well, We Get His View
No time to play, but the view certainly is great! I love working in his office, but I will be glad to get back to my own (new) space...

The Sole Occupant Of The Deck
The deck at the blue house has seen woefully little action this summer. I do believe it has been used, oh, once! The deck hasn't been completely lonely this summer. While it's been virtually void of humans, it has been occupied by this spider, who seems to have taken up residence and spins some pretty cool webs.

Learning Italian Underground
Tuesday and Thursday nights for the last three weeks, I've boarded a bus from the university campus out on the point down to the noisy downtown core and disappeared underground to learn Italian. The downtown campus is a pretty drab and dreary location, especially after the beautiful campus I spend my days on. I am enjoying learning Italian, but I will be very glad when September comes and I can once again take classes at the campus on the point, in a classroom well above ground.

ASRS
The newest addition to Main Library, the Barber Learning Centre, has a very cool robot book retrieval system. It's called ASRS. There are windows along the north side of the building so that passersby can check out the robot at work. I have known a number of people, including my boss, who were so mesmerized watching the robot, they lost track of time. It's very cool. Unfortunately the glazed windows make it hard to get a great picture, but this is still kind of a neat shot.

Small Boys With Blocks
There are two pictures today because I just couldn't resist!
My cousin and her family are in Kelowna this week as well, so I thought I better stop by and give her the blanket that I finished a while ago for her youngest son, who arrived before the blanket was done and who is now three months old. And is adorable. And has the biggest grin ever (which you can't see here because he's sleeping). And looks like his mommy.
I also took some blocks over for her older son, who is two and a half. We took him a wooden trailer truck when we saw them in October and he loved them. He was a little confused about why he also got a present and wanted to know if I was going to take the blocks home with me. He didn't want me to leave, but I promised I'd see him again and the next time I'd try to bring Alex. He is also adorable. And *he* looks like his daddy.

Chocolate Mousse Nostalgia
When we were kids, my Mom used to make these yummy chocolate mousses. She's put them in square red tupperware boxes with clear lids and if we were lucky, we'd get to have one when there was company. We knew how to make the frozen chocolate and rum goodness last for as long as possible before it turned into a runny, melted mess. A few summers, some friends of my parents' from university house-sat in Summerland at a beautiful house with a view and an orchard and a pool and we would go over and spend the day with them and we'd take chocolate mousse.
Tonight, Sheila, half of the house-sitting couple, arrived at our house for a few days, just in time for dinner. Neither my parents or Sheila remember the mousse in Summerland, but my sisters do. So it was fitting when out came the square red tupperware, filled with mousse, on a hot summer's night when we had company for dinner.
My Mom hasn't made mousse in years, but it was still as yummy and special as I remembered it!

Uncle Sammy
While in Kelowna, I'm earning my keep by watering my Mom's garden (she and my Dad are away for the weekend). This morning, I spent some quality time hanging out with Uncle Sammy after the morning watering was done. We found Uncle Sammy at the garden centre a few years ago and as soon as we saw him, we all thought he looked like my Dad's Uncle Sammy. My Mom got him for my Dad for Father's Day that year and Uncle Sammy, with his cigar and his homemade wine, has been the guardian of the (butterfly) garden ever since.

Lakeland Realty
My sisters and I wandered downtown Kelowna searching for THE PERFECT DRESS today after they swam across the lake and we had a yummy brunch at the Bo'. We didn't find the dress, not downtown, but we did find this long forgotten sign on a building that recently had a fire. I can't remember what was in this space before the fire, but it wasn't Lakeland Realty.

The 'Wack
I caught a ride to k-town with my cousins tonight. Thank goodness for air conditioning. We stopped in Chilliwack (isn't it beautiful?) to get some cheap gas and rolled into town around 10:30 tonight. Not bad for leaving in rush hour and going past Merritt and the Mountain Music Fest people. Tom said it was a record night for the number of broken down vehicles on the side of the road. They had all kinds of problems - overheated engines, flat tires, and who knows what else.

Square Dancing Under Robson Street
After my Italian class tonight, I dragged myself outside to watch the square dancers and break dancers. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves despite the melting heat. I don't know how the ladies in the crinolines do it...not only are they exercising, they're wearing layers. Oh well, it was fun to watch. The break dancers were all probably late teens to about mid thirties and the square dancers were late teens to oh, late eighties? And boy were some of their dresses elaborate.

Arbutus Market
I used to wander my neighbourhood a lot and would often pass the Arbutus Market and think, gee I should stop in there some time and have a coffee. It looks so nice and cozy. Almost four years ago, some friends of mine had a beautiful little girl named Molly. One cold winter night when Peggy (her mommy) and I were out walking, we decided to go it. It was cozy and warm and had steamy windows. It was great! I walked past it tonight on my way home from the gym, like I often do and thought to myself, it's probably time to go back. I didn't...it's too warm, but maybe I'll call Peggy and see if she'll come join me for coffee one day soon.

Deathly Hallows Countdown
I've got my key so that at midnight on July 21 I can trade it in for a book. Alex and I have our tickets to the big bash at VanDusen gardens sponsored by our wonderful local bookstore. It's all exciting and there are only 12 days to go...I can't wait for July 20!

Eensy Weensy Spider...Not 81st Birthday
Here's my deck buddy...I found him this morning as I was sweeping the leaves off the deck. There were so many leaves, if I didn't know better, I would think it was fall already.
If you were hoping for 81st birthday pictures, those will come later...
UPDATE 09/07/07: There are now 81st birthday pictures at scribbles, scratches and scrawls.

Getting Ready For The 81st Birthday Party
Tomorrow is my 81st birthday party...Okay, maybe not, but according to a picture of Heather's, I must have turned 80 last year because the cake looks like it's more fire than cake, so following that theory, I will be 81 this year.
Which means we need drinks...lots of drinks...so tonight I premade some margaritas in a pail...

Still Going Strong
